Song Review: Cold by Maroon 5 and Future

Cold is one of Maroon 5's most underrated songs. Sure, it's crazy that a band as devoid of life as Maroon 5 could get someone like Future to collab with them, but Cold is a really good song. Let's start with the production. Cold is a major outlier in Maroon 5's music. While most Maroon 5 songs have pretty basic production, Cold's production is trippy as hell. It feels like a musical acid trip, similar to the I Took A Pill In Ibiza Remix. On top of that, Adam sounds great. He doesn't have that annoying falsetto, and he genuinely feels passionate in the song. Future's guest verse is also pretty good. Like with Life Is Good, it has a lot of charm and sounds really nice over this trippy beat. And then there's the music video. Dear god do I love this music video. It starts off normally enough, with Levine talking to John, his wife, and Future in the car, and then him going into this mansion to go to a party, but then at the 1:42 mark, the music video goes from decent to amazing. It's like if Raoul Duke wandered onto the set of The Muppet Movie. There is so much bizarre insanity in this music video. A creepy fox, a fish with a human head a la Seaman, monster legs playing the piano, a girl wearing a chicken mask, a sexy police lady, police cars upside down in midair, a horse-man, a bunny, a horned man smashing a piano, Future turning into a teddy bear, and an underwater wedding attended by eyeless people, where the priest is holding a staff with a cow skull. I'm not making any of this up, all of that stuff is in the actual music video. It's an acid trip and a half. Bottom line, I love Cold. It's weird, it's catchy, it's bizarre, it's insane, it's an absolute blast. Even if you hate Maroon 5, please check this song out. It's easily one of their best.
