Album Review: A Very Trainor Christmas by Meghan Trainor

Unlike a lot of people, I actually like Christmas Music. Sure, not every Christmas song is great, but for every Christmas Shoes and Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk on Christmas), there's a Jingle Bell Rock, Feliz Navidad, and Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. So, as a Christmas Music fan, I'm going to look at Meghan Trainor's Christmas album, A Very Trainor Christmas, and see if it's as good as Better When I'm Dancin' or as awful as No. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/pt/c/ce/Meghan_T...

Cover: This cover is meh. It's not awful, but it's really simple and plain. It's just Meghan standing in front of a bunch of presents, decked out in Christmas garb, and biting a Candy Cane. Not awful, but could've been a lot better. Verdict: 3/5.

Song 1: My Kind Of Present

My Kind Of Present is basically All I Want For Christmas Is You lite. But despite that, it's still really good. Meghan sounds nice, the beat is nice and jazzy, the lyrics are alright, and it manages to capture the jolly spirit of Christmas, without any of the faux feminism that plagues Meghan's bad songs. A great start.

Verdict: 5/5.

Song 2: It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Unlike John Legend's cover of Baby It's Cold Outside (Screw that cover), Meghan's cover of It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas is really good. It stays faithful to the original, Meghan's voice sounds lovely and fits well with the song, and it does a great job capturing the Christmas spirit. It's not as great as the original, but it does come close.

Verdict: 5/5.

Song 3: I Believe In Santa

This song is really bad. The opening is awful, the beat is annoying, Meg sounds terrible, the lyrics are hokey, and the trumpets, while not as bad as in Willy Wonka, are really annoying. A definite skip.

Verdict: 0/5.

Song 4: Last Christmas

I really like this cover. It's funky, Meghan sounds great, the tune is boppin as hell, and it has none of the problems that plagued the original. A definite album highlight.
Verdict: 5/5.

Song 5: Holidays

This song is awesome. It's funky, groovy and fun, Meghan sounds fantastic, and it has frickin' Earth Wind And Fire! What more do you need to tell you that this song is good?

Verdict: 5/5.

Song 6: Christmas Party

This song is really great. The production feels like it came from an AJR song, Meghan sounds great, the beat is funky, the lyrics are cool, and it has a quintessentially Christmassy feel. This album is going strong.

Verdict: 5/5.

Song 7: Winter Wonderland

This is a very lovely cover. The ukulele sounds lovely, Meghan's voice is fantastic, and the song has a nice jolly tone. Easily on par with the original.

Verdict: 4/5.

Song 8: White Christmas

Another amazing cover. The production is amazing, Meghan sounds amazing, and the song is so lovely and has such a cozy vibe. Oh, and Seth Macfarlane is on this song too. And for someone who isn't primarily a singer, Seth kills it. His voice is frickin' fantastic. You can barely even tell that it's him. Easily one of the best songs on this album.

Verdict: 6/5.

Song 9: Holly Jolly Christmas

This cover is alright, but it's really bland. It's just a typical cover, which doesn't add anything new. It's bland, commercially, and not that memorable. If you want to listen to it, fine, but you're not missing much if you don't.

Verdict: 3/5.

Song 10: Christmas Got Me Blue

This song is alright. The beat is cool, Meg sounds decent, there's a bit of funk thrown in, and the song's premise is really interesting. A really good song with decent lyrics.

Verdict: 4/5.

Song 11: Sleigh Ride

This song is really good. Unlike Holly Jolly Christmas, this is a cover that adds a lot of umph and funk. The beat is cool, Meghan sounds great,  and it manages to capture a Christmassy feeling, while sounding fantastic. An absolutely fantastic piece of music.

Verdict: 6/5.

Song 12: My Only Wish

This song is meh. The beat is eh, Meghan sounds alright, but there's nothing that memorable or interesting about it. Major skip

Verdict: 3/5.

Song 13: The Christmas Song

Not really feeling this one. It tries to be relaxing and jazzin, but it's too unbalanced and uneven to pull it out. Also, Meghan's voice does not work for this kind of song. At all. A definite skip.

Verdict: 2/5.

Song 14: Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

While not the worst cover on this album, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is the most pointless. It doesn't do anything that any other version of the song hasn't done, and Meghan's voice sounds...ok, but it's not anything spectacular. If you've listened to any version of  Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, you've heard this one. SKIP.

Verdict: 1/5.

Song 15: Naughty List

I am totally feeling this song. The melody is tropical and boppin', Meghan sounds great, the lyrics are decent, and it manages to convey the Christmas spirit in its own way. A definite album highlight.

Verdict: 5/5.

Song 16: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Another boring and forgettable cover. Just listen to the original. This one is boring as a C-Span concert.

Verdict: 0/5.

Song 17: I'll Be Home

Wow this song is BORING. Everything is so blah and dull and crushing. Ugh. The production is sappy, Meghan sounds dull as hell, easily the worst song on the album. SKIP THIS. PLEASE.

Verdict: -2/5.

Song 18: Silent Night

And we end this album with, big shock, another cover. So, do things end off with a bang, or a whimper? A bang. This cover is very nice. The production is nice, Meghan's voice is soft and sweet, and the song has a nice, lovely vibe. Easily on par with the original, and a great choice to end the album on.

Verdict: 5/5.

Final thoughts: A Very Trainor Christmas is a very enjoyable Christmas album. There are a few stinkers once in a while, and some pretty pointless covers, but most of the album is full of wonderful Christmas tunes, and some very good covers on par with, or even better than, their originals. If you're a fan of Christmas music, and want something new to listen to for the holidays, check this album out. And even if you hate Meghan Trainor with a passion, I still recommend checking out this album. It's nice to see that Meghan Trainor can ignore her misandrist attitude, and make a Christmas album that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Thank you, Meghan Trainor. This album truly is a gift.

Verdict: 5/5.
