Song Review: Boyfriend by Ariana Grande and Social House

 

If it wasn't for 7 Rings and Break Up With Your Girlfriend I'm Bored, Boyfriend would be the worst song Ariana Grande ever made. I know a lot of people like this one, but unlike Thank You, Next, I just straight up don't see the appeal in this song whatsoever. Why? First off, the production. I cannot stand how this song sounds. At no part does it sound good. There is no rhythm whatsoever. It's just synthesized, processed nonsense. Also, what the hell is that noise at the beginning? It sounds like a synthesizer that gave up on life. Ok, bad production is one thing, how are the voices? AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! Ariana sounds terrible. Her voice is nasally, annoying, and whiny, and Social House is a non-presence. Also, the entire premise doesn't make sense. So, they're not in a relationship, yet they don't want each other to be in a relationship? That makes no sense. If their relationship is platonic, why would they not want each other to have a significant other? Treat You Better is a massive puke stain of a song, but at least with that song, it's clear that Shawn wants the girl for himself. But with this, Ariana doesn't want SH to get a girlfriend, despite the fact that their relationship is platonic. And if they actually are in love, and are just pretending, the song doesn't really make that clear, and it falls flat. Bottom line, this song just sucks. If you like it, fine. If you haven't heard it, there's no real harm in hearing it, but these artists have made much better songs, so, in my opinion, don't bother.
