Song Review: The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars vs Grenade by Bruno Mars

 

When people point towards bad Bruno Mars songs, they tend to point to these songs. And I half agree. Because I actually kind of like The Lazy Song. Why? Well for starters, it does what every good Bruno Mars song does: utilize his natural charisma. A lot of people when hating on this song say "oh, he's so arrogant and douchey". But I don't really see that. I just see him as a charismatic guy who just wants to relax. And on top of that, this song is great. The Lazy Song is just such a catchy, fun, boppin groove. The beat is nice and catchy, Bruno sounds great, the production is lovely, the music video is fun and charming, and the lyrics? Yeah, that's the one critique I agree on. A lot of the lyrics in this song are... pretty bad. 

Uh I'm gonna kick my feet up and stare at the fan 

Turn the TV on Throw my hand in my pants 

Nobody's gon' tell me I cant, no- So, you're going to look at a fan, turn on the television, and masturbate? Livin the dream, Bruno!

I'll be loungin' on the couch just chillin' in my snuggie
Flip to MTV so they can teach me how to Dougie
'Cause in my castle I'm the freakin' man-

I don't have a problem with the snuggie part, because snuggies are cool. But that Dougie reference is stupid, and how did you not make the obvious pun of "Cause in my castle I'm the freakin' king"? 

Tomorrow I'll wake up do some P90x

 Meet a really nice girl have some really nice sex 

And she's gonna scream out this is great "Oh my god, this is great"-Yeah, that one pretty much explains itself.

Yeah, I might mess around and get my college degree
I bet my old man will be so proud of me
But sorry pops you'll just have to wait- Why did you feel the need to bring that up, Bruno?

So yeah, The Lazy Song is a song riddled with flaws. But it makes up with it's flaws by being fun, enjoyable, catchy, and a song we can all relate to. As Todd In The Shadows said in his worst of 2011 list, we need songs like this. Songs for when we just wanna do nothing and be lazy. And as flawed as it is, The Lazy Song fits that role really well. Also, the monkey mask dancers are cool. Grenade on the other hand? Yeah, that song is as bad as everyone says it is. For starters, unlike The Lazy Song, Grenade doesn't take advantage of Bruno's natural charisma. But that's the least of this song's problems because WOW this song sucks. Bruno's voice sucks, the production is terrible, the lyrics are absolutely terrible, the music video is idiotic, and it's an all around unpleasant piece of ugliness. As much as it pains me to compliment something about Treat You Better, at least that song has an interesting rhythmic structure, and at least Shawn was 18 when he wrote it. Bruno was 26 at the time he made Grenade. Oh, and the cherry on top, at the end of the music video, Bruno's character lets himself get run over by a train. He would rather be injured or killed than live a life without the girl he wants. Screw you. The only good thing about Grenade is that at least it's better than Amnesia by 5 Seconds Of Summer. In conclusion, The Lazy Song is alright with me, but Grenade can go die in a hole as far as I'm concerned. Jeremy out.
